    Cave Story is a Metroidvania freeware game from 2004 made by one guy and was one of the first indie games that really took off in popularity since it was unique at the time, A lot of modern indie creators like Toby Fox for example got inspired by Cave Story too!! I highly recommend trying it out blind since thats what the creator wanted people to first experience it!!
